Combination rollers in focus

Combination roller

Combination rollers enable both vertical and horizontal movements in machines and lifting systems. Therefore, they are versatile: whether as guide rollers in conveyor systems or in robust linear units.

What are combination rollers?

Combination rollers are guide rollers that can absorb both radial and axial forces. This is achieved through the combination of cylindrical radial rollers and axial guide rollers, which are integrated into a single housing. This capability distinguishes combination rollers from conventional rollers, which typically support only one direction of load.

Importance of combination rollers in conveyor technology

Combination rollers play a crucial role in conveyor technology as they significantly impact the efficiency and flexibility of lifting and conveying systems. Their ability to absorb both radial and axial loads enables the reliable movement of heavy loads in various directions. This versatility makes combination rollers ideal for different applications, whether in automated warehouses, manufacturing facilities, or logistics centers.

Types of combination rollers

Combination rollers are available in a variety of designs tailored to the different requirements of the industry. They are made from materials such as durable steel, lightweight polyamide, or corrosion-resistant stainless steel. Heavy-duty rollers are ideal for extreme loads, while precision rollers ensure high accuracy in applications with the strictest demands. For applications where speed and smoothness are critical, plastic rollers are an excellent choice. This variety of combination rollers allows for finding the perfect solution for almost every industrial challenge.

What advantages do combination rollers offer?

Combination rollers offer a variety of advantages that make them an ideal solution for various industrial applications. One key advantage is their high load capacity and durability, enabling them to move heavy loads safely and efficiently. This makes them especially valuable in applications that require robust and long-lasting components.

Another benefit is the flexibility of the combination rollers. They can easily be adapted to different requirements and environments, whether through adjustable variants or the use of various accessories. As a result, they are useful in numerous applications, from simple conveyor systems to customized handling systems.

In addition, combination rollers are known for their longevity and low maintenance requirements. Many models are designed to require minimal upkeep, leading to lower operating costs and higher availability of machines and systems. This combination of load-bearing capacity, flexibility, and low maintenance makes combination rollers an efficient and reliable solution in the industry.

ALFATEC as a manufacturer of combination rollers

At ALFATEC, we develop customized handling systems that are specifically tailored to the requirements of our clients. The technical foundation for every clever solution is our heavy-duty guiding system with guide rollers and guide profiles. This modular system allows you to design and produce cost-effective and straightforward solutions.

As a certified welding specialist, we expertly weld our combination rollers with the desired fastening elements into ready-to-install assemblies. This reduces your assembly effort.

Designs and accessories

Combination rollers are available in different designs, including fixed and adjustable variants. In adjustable combination rollers, the position is often adjusted using distance rings or an eccentric to precisely align the roller and tailor it to the specific requirements of the application.

Accessories for combination rollers include fastening elements, clamping brackets, and spacer elements. These components vary depending on the design and provide additional flexibility and stability during installation and use of the rollers in various handling systems.

Where are combination rollers used?

Combination rollers find versatile applications in various industries:

  • Conveyor Technology: They are used in conveyor systems, production lines, and storage systems, where they ensure smooth material movement and support the efficient transport of goods.
  • Automation Technology: In robotic and automation systems, combination rollers play a key role by enabling the precise movement and guidance of components, thus contributing to the optimal performance of automated processes.
  • Mechanical Engineering: Combination rollers are used in lifting and conveying systems as well as in heavy-duty applications, as they can carry high radial and axial loads, thereby increasing the reliability and stability of machines.
  • Warehouse Logistics: They are indispensable in stacker cranes, pallet conveyors, and automated warehouses to ensure efficient inventory management and fast transportation of goods.

Selection criteria for combination rollers

When selecting the right combination rollers, various factors play a role to ensure that the roller meets the requirements.

Load requirements

Combination rollers are characterized by their ability to handle high radial and axial loads. Heavy-duty rollers ensure the safe and precise movement of loads up to 200 tons or more.

Combination rollers for high temperatures

Environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and chemicals also influence the choice of the appropriate combination roller. Special high-temperature rollers are used for operating temperatures of up to 250 degrees.

Maintenance requirements and durability

Relubrication of combined rollers is an essential measure for extending their service life and maintaining their performance. Combination rollers, which are often subjected to high radial and axial loads in industrial applications, require regular lubrication to minimize wear, reduce friction and ensure trouble-free operation.

In normal environments such as industrial halls, regular lubrication at intervals of 6-12 months is sufficient. External factors such as dirt, moisture, temperature, increased operating times or chemical substances can lead to the interval having to be shortened.

Lifetime-lubricated combined rollers

Alternatively, lifetime-lubricated combined rollers offer a maintenance-free solution, as they are provided with a special lubrication ex works that is sufficient for the entire service life and does not require relubrication. They are particularly suitable for systems that are difficult to access or automated, as they reduce maintenance work and minimize downtime. However, once the lubrication is exhausted, the roller must be replaced. These rollers are ideal for applications with stable operating conditions and moderate loads where continuous, maintenance-free use is desired.

Grade 3 grease

Many combination rollers use NLGI grade 3 grease, which has a solid consistency and is particularly suitable for applications where high mechanical stability is required. This grease offers optimum protection against wear and ensures that the rollers work reliably even under extreme conditions.

Briefly summarized: Combination roller

Combined rollers are versatile guide rollers that are used in industry for the transportation and movement of loads. They perform a central function in modern conveyor technology by efficiently handling both radial and axial loads. Thanks to their robust construction and high-quality materials, combination rollers are extremely durable and are characterized by a remarkable versatility that allows them to adapt to different applications and operating conditions.
