Importance of sea freight transport
According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, around 90% of global goods traffic is transported by sea freight ship. There are currently around 38 million sea freight containers in circulation worldwide, and this number is rising. Internationally standardized container dimensions enable goods to be loaded, transported, stored, and unloaded quickly and easily.
Structure and characteristics of a container
A typical sea freight container has a sturdy frame, solid walls, and watertight steel doors. It weighs around 3,8 tons when empty and can be loaded with up to 26 tons of material. Manufacturing is becoming increasingly automated in order to meet rising demand.
Use of ALFATEC multi-axis portals
At a container production facility in China, ALFATEC multi-axis gantry cranes ensure fast and smooth production processes. A single steel container wall for a 40-foot container is approximately 12,2 m long, 2,5 m wide and weighs over 1,000 kg.

Dimensions and performance
ALFATEC multi-axis gantries reach impressive dimensions: 30 m total length, 16 m width and the height of a single-family home. The linear axes accelerate at 2.3 m/s², which is comparable to the acceleration of a car from 0 to 100 km/h. The Z-axis can rotate 360° to achieve optimal process times and cycle specifications. Despite the high load capacity of one tonne and component lengths of over 12 m, the gantries ensure precise positioning.
